What’s up fam, we’re gonna keep it short and sweet this week.
I’m in a busy phase of life right now between working my 9-5, keeping up with my writing and workout routines, and planning a month-long overseas trip with my girlfriend coming up soon (among other things).
It’s times like this that push my usual daily systems and habits to the limit (in just the last week, I’ve come pretty close to the burnout line). But prioritizing one thing has helped me keep it all afloat so far: Minimizing mental clutter.
See, in my experience, having a jam-packed calendar for a couple of months is one thing. But having an over-active monkey mind that’s stressing out over every little thing that happens (or could happen) in that time is what really tends to push me over the edge.
Now that I’m wise to this game, I’m sticking close to three mental habits to keep my mind clear and ready for the next thing on my calendar:
1. Meditation
A quick, 5-10 minute session first thing when I wake up (and again last thing before bed) makes a huge difference for me.
2. Basic Self-Hypnosis
My favourite form of this right now is getting into a relaxed state and repeating to myself: “I delete all the thoughts that have built up in my head until this moment.” It works like a quick reset for my mental hard drive.
3. Intention Setting
This is especially helpful when I catch myself slipping into reactive mode (e.g. getting mad at my calendar for being so full). When that happens, I step back and imagine my ideal outcome for the day, week, etc. and remind myself to trust that it will all work out.
If you’re in a busy phase of life right now (and even if you’re not), I highly recommend these three mental habits. Let me know if you give them a try!
Until next week,
–Riley
